I began making perfume while studying industrial design. Design is all about evoking emotion by playing with shape, material, texture & color. I have in the past, struggled to feel good in my day to day life and I wanted to create objects to help people feel good when they use them. Whatever meaning I was trying to find in myself I wanted to create by sparking it in others. It was while I was focused on how emotions are evoked with the senses that I truly discovered scent.
I had always loved scent but like most people it was just an extra sense, nice to have but not something I paid much attention to. Once I had begun to pay attention I was shocked by how much emotion and attachment everyday scents contained for me. It turns out I had been building and creating a tapestry of scent associations my whole life, we all have. When I began noticing and exploring scent deeply, a whole world opened up. In slowing down to enjoy and explore scent I began to notice so much more of my own life. I found connections to myself I hadn’t been aware of. In noticing how different notes made me feel, I could use those notes to feel those feelings again and again.
In short, in finding more in scent, I found so much more in myself.
